The 6 Exam Domains and Their Weights
The LFCA exam is divided into six domains and each domain has a specific weight, which tells you how much of the exam focuses on that topic. Because of this, your study plan should roughly match these percentages.

System Administration Fundamentals is the largest section of the exam, making up 30% of the total score. That means it deserves the biggest share of your study time.
Many candidates spend too much time on Linux Fundamentals because it feels more familiar, even though it accounts for only 16% of the exam. A balanced study plan should reflect the actual exam weights rather than focusing on the topics that feel most comfortable.
What Each Domain Actually Tests
- Linux Fundamentals (16%) covers the basics of the Linux operating system, the filesystem hierarchy, core file management commands, system administration commands, and introductory networking commands.
- System Administration Fundamentals (30%) is the heaviest domain and covers everything involved in managing a live Linux system: user accounts, time and date configuration, package management, system monitoring with tools like vmstat and
iostat, and the full networking fundamentals stack. - Cloud Computing Fundamentals (18%) tests whether you understand cloud infrastructure concepts: IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS service models, the 4 deployment models, high availability and scalability patterns, serverless computing, and cloud billing and cost management.
- Security Fundamentals (14%) covers the practices every sysadmin applies before putting a Linux server on the internet: SSH hardening, firewall configuration, file permissions, special permission bits, encryption at rest and in transit, and network-level security controls including fail2ban.
- DevOps Fundamentals (12%) tests the CI/CD pipeline, container technology and Docker, software deployment environments, version control with Git, and the DevOps cultural and organizational concepts including the Agile connection.
- IT Project Management Fundamentals (10%) is the domain that surprises most candidates because it has nothing to do with the command line. It covers the PMBOK project lifecycle, Waterfall and Agile methodologies including Scrum and Kanban.
How Long Does LFCA Preparation Take?
- For someone with no prior Linux experience: 8 to 12 weeks studying one chapter per day, running every command in a terminal as you go.
- For someone with some Linux or sysadmin experience: 4 to 6 weeks, with the extra time focused on the domains furthest from your day-to-day work, which for most experienced sysadmins means the Cloud Computing and IT Project Management domains rather than the Linux and System Administration ones.
- For someone with 2 or more years of active sysadmin experience: 2 to 3 weeks of focused review, concentrating on cloud, DevOps, and project management rather than the Linux fundamentals you already know.
