For years, certifications in the Information Technology world have helped job candidates demonstrate their skills to potential employers.
In the Linux world, this is as true as in any other area, with businesses primarily looking for certified candidates to fill available vacancies. In other words, certifications are a proven way of gaining an advantage when applying for a job.
Since August 2014 you don’t have to travel to a testing center and spend a lot of money in associated expenses to take a certification exam.
Thanks to the Linux Foundation, you can aspire to a world-class certification by taking a monitored online exam from the comfort of your own home.
The Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) is a certification exam offered by The Linux Foundation, which is a performance-based exam that tests your knowledge of Linux system administration and helps you advance your career in Linux.
If you are interested in becoming LFCS certified, I encourage you to start preparing today.
We at Tecmint.com have put together 33 chapters covering the topics required in both exams and reviewed them taking into consideration the many comments we have received over the last 5+ years.
Also, we do our best to keep the book updated with the latest modifications that have been made to the domain competencies of both exams. The last revision of this material on May 11, 2023, which is announced by the Linux Foundation.
What’s inside LFCS eBook?
We are now pleased to present to you those 33 exam objectives with 340+ pages in this ebook (PDF format). That was a constantly-repeated request over that same period – you spoke, and we listened!

Hi Ravi,
Firstly I just wanted to say thank you for such a wonderful blog and for sharing so much information with us all!
I have recently purchased the LFCS training course through the Linux Foundation and to be honest, it isn’t very good and hasn’t helped me prepare for the exam much at all.
Could I please get a sample of both preparation ebooks to check it has the information I need to help me pass?
Thanks again for the great work you are doing with sharing your knowledge
@Dipak,

Hi, Ravi!
I purchased your LFCS and LFCE ebook bundle way back 2018. May I still ask for an updated copy of it, because until now, I haven’t taken the certifications yet?

@Christian,
Just sent you both LFCS and LFCE updated copies…

@Justin,
Just sent you both preview copies to your email address.
Hi Ravi,
Thanks for your great e-book :) Almost finished reading it.
Since I am still not completely sure about the domains and competencies of the exam, I wanted to ask the following questions:
Thank you in advance for your tips. Any comment could be useful in order to prepare for the exam :)
@Cust0m,
In earlier LFCS Domains and Competencies, the NFS chapter was there, but later in v3.18, they have removed from the syllabus, but we kept the NFS chapter in the book for testing the mounting environment. – Now NFS is not a part of v3.18 exam.
Squid set up is for configuring Linux machines to use a proxy to access the internet, which enables you to monitor, access, or restrict internet access to users. The advance set up is for web filtering, blocking websites, IP’s, etc..
Hi Ravi,
Thanks for the quick reply – that helps me a lot :)
As far as squid is concerned: Does that mean, I can expect the basic squid config and configuring the clients to use squid from the exam? And not the advanced setup with web filtering, SquidGuard, etc.?
Hello, I am from Perú and here companies ask for Lpic certification, and my question is :this book can help me too to this kind of certification?
@Dextre,
No idea, but these books cover most of the things which are standard on most of the Linux certifications.
Ravi Saive
Could you send me a sample of LFCS?
Thank you!
@Antonio,
Sent you an LFCS sample to your email address as requested…

@Pravan,
No updates yet, if any will re-distribute again…
Hi,
After completing an udemy course and LFS201, I feel that I need some more training material in order to cover all domains of the LFCS exam. The articles on your website look quite promising, but since it is the third resource I might buy, it would be great to receive a preview of the LFCS ebook. If it is possible, it would be awesome if something about managing virtual machines would be included in the preview.
Best Regards
Johann

@Liezel,
I have sent you a preview copy of the LFCS book, also these books are based on last update i.e. LFCS Domains and Competencies Update – April 2018.
Thanks Ravi. I received it.
Hi Ravi,
I hope you are well. I purchased the LFCS prep guide back in 2018 which was very useful and I appreciate the hard work you put in to write it. I tried to contact you directly via email earlier in May for an updated version, unfortunately without success. I hope this message will reach you as I would also like to also purchase LFCE prep guide ASAP. Please get in touch if you can.

I was wondering if I could get some more discounts on top of the existing offer to make it a little more affordable.
Hi, can you send me sample LFCS and LFCE? This version is the newest or some old version?
@Michal,
This book is based on v3.18 Domains and Competencies… I’ve sent you a sample as requested.
Hi Ravi,
I bought your LFCE Certification Preparation Guide last year but didn’t get a chance to take the exam. I register and planning to take the exam in a couple of months. Was there any update on the LFCE doc.
@Pravi,
LFCE Domains and Competencies V3.18 is the last update we have….
I bought LFCS/LFCE back in 2018 you sent me the updated doc for LFCS but have not received an updated copy of LFCE.
@Anthony,
LFCE objectives are completely changed to v3.18 domain and competencies. So, you need to buy it again…

If you don’t want to send the sample for any reason, be a man and say so, don’t hide behind moderation like a coward.
@Matt,
I have sent you again, please check your spam section…
Hello Ravi!
I have a small question. Actually, there were no discounts on the book during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Do you have any plans for the Christmas sale? I’m ready to buy a book at a discount and support the tecmint project but in the current realities, the book’s cost isn’t commensurate with the cost of Sander van Vogt’s courses.
Best regards,
Ferrus
@Ferrus,
We don’t provide any discounts, because the price is reasonable and you will get updates for free…
Hello Ravi Saive !
Thank you very much for your hard work!
I’m really interested in buying this ebook, but something is still unclear for me. How often the LFCS cert is updated?
Do you update these ebooks every year?
I saw earlier comments about a version of 2018, and another one of this year and I’m a bit confused.
@Marty,
The Linux Foundation updates exam objectives of LFCS and LFCE mostly on a yearly basis. We update both LFCS and LFCE books whenever new updates are released by Linux Foundation.
My main concern is about having the most updated version to pass the exam. I was going to buy this 2019 version, but it shouldn’t be useful as soon as the Linux Foundation updates the exam objectives for the new year.
As this 2019 version is set to expire soon, and in order to avoid spending the money twice, would it be possible for me to buy it at the normal fee and when the 2020 version will be released at a reduced fee that you’ll propose?
@Marty,
Don’t worry, all updates of both LFCS and LFCE are free to clients who purchased these books.
Thanks.
Hello,
Could you maybe expand a little the explanation of the Bash script (example 3) of the section of tar? I don’t understand how “the filename is redirected to the exclude option”.
What exclude option?
Thank you very much
Is it possible to get a printed book? I want to keep it like that. Thanks and congrats on the effort you do.
@Saul,
Sorry, we don’t have a printed copy of this book.
Thanks
Hi @Ravi, the PDF you sent me has the same content that the content on this website, I was looking for more examples or exercises as it claims to have. “Each chapter demonstrates crucial topics and relevant exam objectives in the beginning and ends with a summary followed by questions and answers.” Could you please check the file you sent me and if it is the most updated one, issue a refund because I don’t see extra value versus what is posted on this amazing web site for free?
@Cesar,
The book contains all the exam objectives with relevant examples with screenshots of each command with output, just go through it you will get idea.
Is this available on amazon? can you make available there ?
@Soni,
No, but will think of publishing the book in amazon soon or later..
I have not received the latest copy of the LFCS and LFCE I bought this pdf and received the revised copy in 2018 but not in 2019 is there a reason for that ?
@Anthony,
I just sent you a revised version of the LFCS and LFCE book.
Hello Ravi Saive, can you please point me out how to use this ebook with the linux foundation objective? I am very frustrated right now, i feel i have just wasted my money buying this ebook and its not the same as the objective.

I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE. I DON’T SEE HOW ITS ALIGN WITH THE LINUX FOUNDATION OBJECTIVE.
@Ashon,
It’s not aligned as per Linux foundations, but this book has all topics as per v3.18 objectives. Just read closely each topic, you will get to know.
Hi Ravi, it seems that the latest version I have, is the may 2018 version. Is it still possible to obtain the latest version? Your hard work in making these books is very much appreciated. I already passed my LFCS using your ebook.

I received both ebooks. Just to note that the LFCS ebook doesn’t list all the chapters. But chapters are there.
@Wilson,
Sorry for that, It seems I’ve sent you an old version of copy in hurry. Just sent you a new updated copy on the same email address..
Hi Admin,

@Ravi,
Earlier, I have sent to this email address: [email protected]. I also sent to the given email address.
Will there be a guide for RHEL 8?

Hi,
Last year I bought “LFCS-LFCE Book June 2018 by TecMint” and I would like to see how can I get update to latest version?
Thank you in advance
Anis
@Anis,
Sent you updated LFCS and LFCE book to the email address used to purchase the book via PayPal.
Hi I’m interested in this book, How you deliver it? It is in a format of PDF that I can read on eReaders?
@Ulises,
Once you purchase, we will deliver the PDF version of book to your email address.
To all Users,
This is to inform you that, with the last revision of this material in January 2019, we have taken into account version 3.18 of the domains and competencies – and updated the LFCS and LFCE book with 66 chapters covering the topics required in both the exams.
This list came into effect on April 10, 2018, as announced by the Linux Foundation.
You can buy these books here: https://www.tecmint.com/linux-foundation-lfcs-lfce-certification-exam-book/
@Ravi , i still didn’t received the last revision of book
@Husam,
Just sent you updated version of LFCE book. Please do give your review about this new version here..
Hi, I bought the book in November, I don´t know if is the update versión. Can you send me a copy of the new versión?
@Francisco,
Just sent you a updated v3.18 LFCS and LFCE book.
To be honest, some of the subjects are the same on tecmint.com for example chapter 33 can’t be the preparation of an advanced exam not even intermediate exam
@Husam,
The chapters on tecmint.com are outdated and haven’t updated since long time, I suggest you to purchase book which is updated as on Jan 19th 2019..
Hi Ravi,
I bought the older version of lfcs-lfce complete and then I bought the new version but lfce only since I did not know you’re sending the new versions to those who already bought old version.
I don’t want the money back and ask for the new lfcs/lfce as I like supporting your efforts, but would it be possible to forward me the complete revised lfcs/lfce version of the ebook?
I’m yet to take the LFCE second time (failed the first time) so will leave a review once I’m done taking the test, but what I’m seeing is that the revised version of your LFCE has around 95% of the exam covered so the review will very likely be favorable.
@Joakim,
Could you please share the email address used to purchase the book via PayPal on our support mail at [email protected].
Ok. It appears that I also got the May 2018 Revised book. Is there an updated version after this? May I kindly obtain the updated copy.Thank you in advance.
@Chilu,
Just sent you updated copy to your email address.
i didn’t receive the newest version of this book, my last version was May2018
@Husam,
Yes, you will get the updated copy by this weekend..
I recently bought this book a week ago. I was looking forward to seeing some hands on lab activities at the end of the chapter. Can you recommend a good resource that has hands on lab activities to practice on?
@Chilu,
We already covered everything with examples and screenshots, and I think which is enough for you to practice on your VM. Just install CentOS or Ubuntu on Virtualbox and start practicing..
Is this book up to date with the new Exam objectives/version?
@Galabuzi,
Yes, the book is updated as per v3.18 changes of LFCS and LFCE.
Ho Ravi, when will you redistribute it to the previous buyers?
@Emil,
Hopefully by this weekend you all get updated copy of LFCS and LFCE v3.18 book.
Hi, I’m thinking of buying the ebook. Is the content of the book the same as the content of the web?
@Fran,
The content of the book is updated as per recent LFCS and LFCE changes, whereas the content on the site is outdated…
thanks, I will buy the book
Hello Ravi,
Are the changes to LFCE also updated? I haven’t received an e-mail with an updated copy.
@Emil,
LFCE updates are in progress, will re-distribute copies soon..
I decided to purchase the book but I don’t have Paypal. I have credit card but Paypal does not allow me to pay via it. Is there any other process to purchase this book?
Thanks in advance.
@Minhaz,
From which country you are? PayPal not available in few countries, so its better do a direct bank transfer, for more details contact [email protected].
Any news WRT to LFCE?
Hello Ravi, when do you think the ebook update will be ready to version v3.18?
@Pablo,
The updates are in progress, hopefully this month end LFCE updates will be ready to re-distribute to all users who purchased the book from us..
Hello Ravi, do you have news regarding the update of the ebook?
@Pablo,
So sorry for such a huge delay, its because of v3.18 updates – now there are 29 chapters we’ve included for LFCE exam and also we separated LFCS and LFCE books to avoid confusion. We hopefully release updates this month..
Hello Ravi, thank you for your response and the great work you do, I wait patiently.
Hi,
What is the difference between the LFCE book and RHCE book?
Hello Ravi, do you include topics such as LXD/LXC? Kerberos? PAM? Heartbeat? These topics are included in LFCE 3.18 exam.
@Emyei,
We are updating the LFCE topics as per v3.18 domain competencies.
you are missing kvm (virsh) and docker for the LFCS guide.
@Francesco,
It’s there, we have already updated the LFCS changes back in June 2018 with v3.18 domains and competencies.
@Ravi
Please keep posted on the progress of getting the latest LFCE changes incorporated.
@Govind,
Yes we are working on it, but the whole exam objectives are changed in LFCE, so it means we have to start from scratch, and it takes a time to update the whole book with new updated changes.
Hello Ravi, I read in the comments that on June 2 the new version of the preparation guide for the LFCS / LFCE cerficicación would be released, is this right or is there still time to launch the new version?
@Pablo,
The new updated version of LFCS and LFCE copies are re-distributed last week to all our clients, didn’t you received yet? what’s your email address?
Hello Ravi, that’s right, I have not received the guide yet.
My email with which I buy the guide is [email protected], but that service has problems so I now use [email protected]
@Pablo,
I just checked, it seems the mail is not delivered and reverse back with error:
I just sent you a book on your new mail address…
Hello,
Any update on the new version? :)
thanks
@Joy,
Updates are in progress, and will be completed by this month end and all new updated copies will be re-distributed first week of May 2018, till then stay tuned to TecMint.com.
Hello
Is the new version available now? Does it also cover the new competencies of LFCE released in June 2018.
Cheers,
Kaido
@Kaido,
New LFCE and LFCS updates are in progress, we will soon re-distribute to all users…
Hi Ravi, still expecting the updated copy. yet to receive it
@Nonso,
All updated LFCE and LFCS copies will be re-distributed this weekend, i.e. June 2nd 2018. Till then stay tuned to Tecmint.com for updates..
Ok, got it. Just had to be a little more patient. Thanks
Is this e-book updated with the latest version of the exams? Are you going to update it once the syllabus change in March?
I ask because I am not sure if I should purchase it straight away or wait for the update…
Thank you!
@Emil,
The book is updated with the latest LFCS/LFCE exam objectives, yes we do update it whenever new updates arrives. I think you should wait till updates are rolled out in March.
Hey, do you have any timeline for the updates in the book? I will be part of the beta-testers of the new LFCE exam https://training.linuxfoundation.org/upcoming-program-changes-for-the-lfce-certification-exam-in-2018#v3.18 and I really need some resources to prepare myself.

Hello, two weeks did pass a few times :( if it won’t come out before the end of the week it won’t be of any help for all the beta testers of the June exam.
@Michael,
The new LFCS and LFCE exam updates are ready and re-distributed to all clients on 1st June 2018.
Dear Ravi,
Few posts below you mentioned that people who purchased the e-book can get the updated version as well.
Would it be possible to send me the updated version once it’s completed?
Regards
@Emil,
Yes, everyone who purchased this book will get updated copy once we complete the update process. Till then stay tuned to tecmint.com
Hello Ravi, yesterday I bought the book for the LFCS / LFCE certification, but I still have not received it, you tell me what the process is like?
The PayPal transaction number is 4S559381MF6576616.
I remain attentive to your comments,
Best regards.
Pablo
@Pablo,
I tried sending several times, but keep getting mail delivery failure error, could you please give me alternative email address or test me at [email protected]
Thanks for the great book. I purchased it earlier this year, but my book and it’s chapter doesn’t match with what this article says. For example the chapter 18 in my book is setting up network services, while here it’s FTP setup. Any chance I got sent the wrong version?
@Infernux,
No need to worry, you’ve got the correct version, we’ve updated the book as per new LFCS and LFCE objectives effective from Feb 2017.
Thanks guys for this awesome e-book!! A must have!
Very nice! Covers the subjects in a practical and very readable fashion. Thanks!
Ravi,
I purchased this book twice. I second time that I purchased it I thought it was an updated copy (since your website said the book was last updated 2/2017 and the chapters listed on the website are different than to ones in my book (from 2016). I was disappointed that I received the same book twice. Can I get the updated copy of the book, please? Thank you for your time and affect that you put into the making of the book. It is a great book especially since there are one others.
@Starr,
Sorry for trouble, just sent you a updated copy of LFCS and LFCE book..:)
Hie l am writing my LFCS and LFCE in a few months time, and due to work pressure i haven’t been getting much time to practice. Will this book have practical exam questions, that can actually help me in jogging my memory and strengthen my Linux skills..
@Farlz,
This LFCS and LFCE book contains everything about exam objectives with practical examples and screnshots that will help you enough to crack the certification.
Do these eBooks cover the 3 distros you have to pick for the exam; CentOS 7, openSUSE 13.1 and Ubuntu 14.04?
@Marc,
Yes, these books covered exam objectives based on three distributions, CentOS, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu.
Thank you, I’ll be buying them now then.
The book is good for what I need for the LFCS certification exam in a week from The Linux Foundation. The only problem is that I have to revert some of the examples to Ubuntu 14.04 because all the examples provided by all courses only provide examples from Centos/Red Hat, which are newer than the Ubuntu 14.04.
They will remove it from the exam in three weeks and for Ubuntu 16.04, which is using the ones from the examples but my exams was paid for last year and its deadline is the the date of the deadline for Ubuntu 14.04.
Therefore, I do not have a choice. I have been using Ubuntu since 2005 and it was released in October, 2004. I started the testing in April of 2005. Before Ubuntu, I was using Microsoft XP, 2003 Server, and Solaris 8. This book is good for review and I base my opinion on experience. Research will always be the way to learn and this is the base on the building block of our world based on Socrates philosophy.
Hi Mr. Ravi,

Hi all,
I bought this prep guide and really looking forward to studying it for my exam.
What I really like about this book is that it is focused on practical examples that will be covered on the exam, with a crucial explanation about each topic.
Thanks to all tecmint crew that made this book, I am warmly recommending it to all you people that are preparing for LFCS-LFCE exam.
Hey! That’s a great price! Are they updated so you can make the exam right away ? Thanks !
@Alexandra,
Yes, we’ve kept the reasonable price for our audience and the book is updated regularly with new exam objectives.
Is the book contains the same material as the article series?
@Sunil,
Yes this LFCS/LFCE book contains same materials as we covered in the article series, but the book is most updated one as compared to article series.
To the Tecmint folks, who have published this book, I passed the LFCS – I used the book as a walk through.
Great revision reading. The trick to the exam is practice practice practice, this book was really useful.
@Ginfaced,
Yeah congratulations for passing out LFCS certification exam..
Got it, thank you
Ok, I have bought the book and it is very comprehensive and personally I’d consider it to be better than the material you get from the LF.
I previously sat the virtual training course with the LF and whilst it was excellent and I highly recommended it, there is a lot to be crammed in in the 4 days of training.
This book, covers the syllabus very well and is good to walk through the examples and write some simple study cards at the same time. I haven’t noticed any syntax errors which makes life easier when trying things out.
A little tip, practice the big ‘how to’ chapters like LVM/RAID setups and time yourself doing them in a virtual lab or on a Raspberry Pi – You will soon get it down to 5 minutes.
This book has proved so useful, I printed it off.
I sit my LFCS next week and I feel better prepared for it already.
Thanks
I bought the LFCE training from Linux Foundation. For most parts, it’s a lot of “do this”, but no real explanation. To ensure I’m not getting the same lack of explanation with this book, do you have some sample pages?
@Ron,
You will get all the explanation with practical examples on LFCE/LFCS exam objectives with clear screenshots..
Hi Ravi, I am interested in this book (course). If there are any revisions or updates will these be passed onto people who purchase the book?. In your opinion, is this book and its content sufficient to pass the exams if followed thoroughly without the need for further books / material from other sources?
@Andrew,
Once you purchase, all future updates of LFCS/LFCE certification are available freely for life. This book is enough to crack the LFCS/LFCE exam in first attempt as it contains everything from the exam point of view..
Hi Ravi, I chose CentOS to do my certification LFCS, how do you manage the different distros on this book? I am able to get advantage from this book? Many thanks
@Miguel,
No issues, you can choose CentOS or Ubuntu or OpenSUSE for your LFCS certification because this book covers all the exam objectives based on CentOS/Ubuntu and OpenSUSE..
Thanks.. I need this preparation guide book.
Hi!
Was the book written based on official training? I am afraid that the content does not include all the skills required to take the test.
@Davi,
The books is completely based on official LFCS and LFCE exam certification objectives with latest content..
Hi dude, i bought the book two days ago bit i have a doubt…form the LFCS exam i have to follow from chapter one till chapter 20, am i right?
@Jose,
Yes, you need to follow chapters 1-20 and LFCE series as well to crack LFCS certification exam..
Thanks for the reply buddy, so in other words i must follow the entire book (229 pages) in order to archive the LFCS right?
@Jose,
Yes, you must follow the both LFCE and LFCS to crack the LFCS certification..
thanks for suggesting this book….cos this is useful for the exams.
